Dr. Michael Helmstetter serves as Co-Founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Technology Acceleration Partners (TechAccel LLC). TechAccel leverages the technical expertise, regulatory infrastructure and the global distribution network of the world’s leading Agriculture and Animal Health companies by matching sourced technologies to these companies’ innovation needs. Technologies typically address rapidly growing food and animal health demands. Partner companies utilize TechAccel to source, acquire and co-fund/develop technologies sharing the de-risking process and accelerating their time to market. Prior to founding TechAccel he served as the fifth President and Chief Executive Officer of MRIGlobal – one of the nation's most prominent research institutions. Michael was responsible for all aspects of leading, managing, operating, and developing the near $700 million Institute, including a staff under management of more than 3,300. Over his 14 years with MRIGlobal (formerly Midwest Research Institute), He was critical to the growth of MRIGlobal from 2 locations to 17 locations in 9 states, as well as several international locations.
Michael was integral to the spin-off of several companies as well as a leadership position in winning a $1billion Department of Energy contract. On being appointed CEO of MRIGlobal he established an aggressive 5-year strategic plan that included a dramatic shift in the way MRIGlobal manages research projects, as well as adding capabilities to serve as prime contractor and thus the direct interface with each customer. Combined revenues for MRIGlobal grew from $322 million in 2008 to $683 million in 2012.
Dr. Helmstetter previously served as MRIGlobal’s Executive Vice President and Director of Research Operations, Senior Vice President of Research Operations, Vice President of Technical Operations, and as Director of East Coast Operations. Prior to joining MRIGlobal, he held a series of laboratory management positions at Applied Marine Research Laboratory in Norfolk, Virginia, before becoming the Program Manager for the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Fort Pierce, Florida. In 1993, Dr. Helmstetter served as President and Chairman of startup Brevard Teaching and Research Laboratories, a post he held until 1999 when MRIGlobal acquired BTR Labs and retained Dr. Helmstetter as Director of its Florida Division.
Dr. Helmstetter has over 28 years of experience working with both the private sector and numerous government agencies. His start-up, spin-off and technology advancement expertise spans many sectors including agriculture, defense and biotechnology. His personal success in laboratory research and development covers biotechnology, toxicology, chemical instrumentation, sampling designs and complex data analysis. Dr. Helmstetter received a Ph.D. in Chemical Toxicology/Oceanography from Old Dominion University in 1992 and a B.S. in Biology from Allegheny College in 1986. He has been a panelist, keynote speaker, lecturer, reviewer to several journals, and has appeared in many Who’s Who publications, including Who’s Who International. He is the author of numerous publications, technical articles, book chapters, and technical reports. Dr. Helmstetter has served on numerous boards and committees including:
